The Preparatory Class for Science & Engineering Studies offered by the Sorbonne French Civilization Courses (CCFS) is a study program designed for international students who wish to prepare for science and engineering studies in France while perfecting their mastery of the French language.
This course provides an enriching and diverse learning experience, combining the acquisition of language skills with specialized training in science and engineering vocabulary.
The preparation includes intensive French courses aimed at strengthening students’ linguistic competence. These courses cover grammar, conjugation, spelling, vocabulary, and written and oral expression. Mastery of French is indeed essential to succeed in scientific and technical fields, with the course aiming to help students communicate effectively in an academic and professional environment related to engineering.
Phonetics is also a key element of the program as it allows international students to improve their pronunciation, oral comprehension, and expression in French. Good pronunciation is essential for clear and precise communication, especially in scientific fields where precision is crucial.
The Preparatory Class for Science and Engineering Studies includes specific courses focused on scientific language and mathematics. These courses provide students with all the skills necessary to understand and communicate in scientific and engineering fields. During these courses, students approach technical concepts and learn to write scientific documents in French.
The program also includes lectures on topics such as aeronautics, environment, architecture, civilization, and French institutions, providing a strong insight into scientific and cultural issues in France, thereby broadening students’ perspectives and strengthening their understanding of French society.
Cultural activities, such as oenology, theater, and cultural outings, complete this learning experience, allowing students to discover French culture and immerse themselves in Parisian life while strengthening their mastery of the French language.
Course objectives
In partnership with the EPF Engineering School, the Sorbonne French Civilization Courses offer non-French-speaking international students wishing to join a diploma course in general engineering in the French language an opportunity to follow intensive preparatory training in French and prepare for science and engineering studies. This preparatory program can be integrated in fall or spring.
Detailed program
This preparation program is offered in two ways:
Modality 1: an annual program consisting of two semesters from October to June.
First semester: from October to February at the CCFS in Paris.
240 hours of intensive French and phonetics courses over 12 weeks, with an average of 20 hours of lessons per week.
Second semester: from March to June at the EPF Engineering School in Cachan. French courses, specialty courses (scientific language, mathematics), conferences (aeronautics, environment, architecture, civilization, and institutions), cultural activities (oenology, theater, cultural outings).
Modality 2: one semester at the CCFS then direct access to the EPF course.
A semester from February to June at the French Civilization Course at the Sorbonne in Paris. 240 hours of intensive French and phonetics courses over 12 weeks, with an average of 20 hours of lessons per week.
Depending on their profile and the quality of their academic results, students will then have the opportunity to join the bachelor’s cycle (general engineer) and the different majors offered by the EPF Engineering School.
Highlights
Students who have successfully completed this program receive a certificate of success as well as an FLE (French as a Foreign Language) certificate, demonstrating their mastery of the French language and their skills in general engineering.
Depending on their profile and the quality of their academic results, students will have the opportunity to join the bachelor’s program (general engineer) and the different specialties offered by the EPF Engineering School.
Validation of acquired knowledge
Continuous assessment during language and phonetics courses (regular evaluation of work and progress) and final exam validating the language courses.
A language certificate is issued at the end of the program upon successful completion.
Target audience
This training is aimed at young adults and adults wishing to acquire and develop their French language skills, for academic or professional purposes, and then wishing to continue their studies in a general engineering sector.
Prerequisites
This training is accessible from level B1.
You must be at least 18 years old, hold a diploma or certificate of completion of secondary studies (ideally in a scientific major for the fall school year and obligatorily in a scientific or mathematical field for the spring school year).
Course material
Manual and/or authentic documents (audio, visual, and written) provided by the teacher.
Workbook and exercises created by the teacher.
Visa
This program meets the criteria for obtaining a student visa for students from outside the European Union.
Application requirements
– Admission to the course is only final when payment is complete (at least one month before the start of the course) and after validation of the registration file.
– A registration certificate is issued after payment of a deposit and presentation of administrative documents (copy of identity document, translation of secondary school diploma, identity photo).
– A mandatory online placement test assigns a level to students before classes begin. An additional test may be requested from the student in certain specific cases.
