Consisting in three mandatory tests, the TCF “tout public” (all audiences) on computer allows non-French speakers to determine their level of French in accordance with the common European framework of reference for languages; valid for two years, it can be part of a professional, academic or personal goal. The TCF assesses the candidates’ mastery of the French language in an exhaustive manner, including oral and written comprehension or production .This test can therefore be used for admission to higher education institutions.
The TCF is made up of 3 compulsory tests, in the form of multiple-choice questions (MCQ):
- Oral comprehension: Collective test: 29 multiple choice questions (4 answer choices, only one correct answer)
- Mastery of language structures: Collective test: 18 multiple choice questions (4 answer choices, only one correct answer)
- Written comprehension: Collective test: 29 multiple choice questions (4 answer choices, only one correct answer)
At the end of the test, all candidates receive a certificate of results which positions them on one of the six levels (from A1 to C2) of the skills scale defined by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). There is no failure of the test, which can be taken several times
